Martin Luther once defined sin as a “life turned in on itself”. It would be very easy right now – amidst a cultural narrative of fear – to become focussed on ourselves and on meeting our own needs.
But think of the possibilities if we looked outwards to the needs of others? We have an amazing opportunity to love our neighbours as ourselves and we can get creative about how. Here are five simple, small and easy ways to get started.
SEND A TEXT A DAY
Why not set an alarm every day to stop, think, pray and then text someone that comes to mind with something encouraging or just to let them know that they’re on your mind.
CALL OR FACETIME SOMEONE LIVING ON THEIR OWN
Some people are living on their own right now and might appreciate a call to show them someone is thinking of them and cares for them. Give your grandparents a call or someone in your hub — seeing someone’s face for 20 minutes will bring you both life!
GIFT A TAKEAWAY VOUCHER
Some people are experiencing this season even more intensely than others. How about gifting a takeaway voucher to someone caring for kids, or with a new baby, or working long hours, or just someone you know who is feeling overwhelmed at the moment. Easing the demand on their time by saving them cooking and washing up can be a super practical way to bless someone!
WRITE A THANK YOU CARD
Do you know anyone who is a key worker and caring for those most in need right now? Why not write them a simple note and pop it in the post to say thank you and to send them some encouragement.
SEND SOMETHING INSPIRING
Have you recently watched something great, or found a particular Bible verse, sermon, podcast, book or piece of art helpful? Pray about who might also find it inspiring and encouraging and send it on with your prayers to them.
